Not everything in life goes entirely according to plan. If a marriage has been divorced and the divorce is final, each of the two former spouses receives a divorce decree. This may seem just a pure formality, but there are a number of situations that require the presentation of this divorce decree. These include e.g.:
- Applying for a new marriage license
- Changing of names, e.g. re-adoption of the maiden name
- Presentation of the divorce decree at the job centre for calculation of maintenance claims and social benefits
- To prove that there is no obligation to assume burial costs in the event of the death of the former spouse

In the case of divorce decrees issued in foreign countries, German authorities frequently also require an apostille and also demand the submission of a certified German translation of the two documents. Anyone wishing to remarry may also be required to present the old marriage certificate including a marginal note confirming the divorce. If the previous marriage was concluded abroad, the marriage certificate must also be translated.
We’d be pleased to make a certified translation of your divorce documents for you – just contact us.
