Documentations that are in electronic and editable form (i.e. no scanned documents or specially protected pdf files from which no text can be copied) can be translated using translation tools. Translation Memories (TMs) (e.g. Trados Translator’s Workbench) store source and target text during the translation process. The source and target text form so-called "translation units", which can be retrieved again at a later time. All new sentences to be translated are compared with the translation units already stored. If similar or identical source sentences are found, then a translation for the sentence is automatically suggested, which can be accepted and/or edited by the translator.
By working with Translation Memories, it is possible to save time and to provide consistent translations when translating source texts that closely resemble each other. Whereby we will possibly grant you a special discount for repeated or very similar passages. In order to estimate this, we will first need to examine the source text files, however. Another advantage of TM software is that the original formatting of the source text is maintained. By additionally using terminology management programs like MultiTerm 95+ or Termbase, it is ensured that a term is always translated in the same way in all documents.
If necessary, it is also possible to compile a TM from earlier translation projects by using text alignment tools. The alignment process requires the original and its translation to be available in electronic form.
